A new charcoal sketch today. This one, a wedding gift to Annabeth Gish, shows some advancement in working with charcoal. I'm slowly growing more comfortable with including it in my "whole package" of techniques. I've also done some more experimental work, which I'm not putting up here, but which I think is paying off.

One new sketch today. This one is of Lucy Lawless and incorporates the full torso and arms, which is new ground for me. I'm still working on mastering heavier shading for greater definition.

One new sketch today. This one is of Juliet Landau (Drusilla, Buffy The Vampire Slayer). For this drawing I consciously aimed for a rougher, less deliberate effect. I must say, it took some discipline to keep to this brief - my instinct was to continue to refine it. But it was a good exercise in using simpler, sketchier lines.

I've completed two more sketches of Lucy Lawless. For these, I experimented with charcoal, which historically has not been a comfortable medium for me. I wasn't happy with the first one (left), which was fairly experimental for me, but I'm extremely happy with the second, on the right. I am considering entering that one in the Dobell Drawing Prize run by the NSW Art Gallery in September. That one also replaces the Annabeth Gish drawing as the focus artwork on the main page.

Just for fun, I've also added a couple of digital artworks from my collection. The first one is a vector drawing of Laurie Holden. Every vector was done by hand with a stylus. That was laborious, but great fun! The second digital piece is a collage of stills from the 2001 movie The Majestic. Source images used with kind permission of Castle Rock Entertainment.
